Happy Mother’s Day// Infinite Smile Project IDEA

mothersdayHail to the Moms everywhere. If you are one you KNOW you deserve this day. In fact you would argue in the court of logic that you deserve an all-paid vacation to an exotic resort in Tahiti for 2 weeks with cocktails served to you while you enjoy an 8 hour massage from a guy named “Thad”. Don’t pretend you didn’t just daydream about that just now.
If you have a Mom but are not a Mom yourself you probably have grown to appreciate her more and more the older you get now that you can see the fruits of her labor in the amazing person you are today. You didn’t get there alone. I promise there were countless nights she wiped up vomit off of every surface known to man, smiled and sang to you as you spit oatmeal in her face as if to say, “What’s up Mom? You feed the dog better food than this!” Not to mention the sleepless nights, tantrums in the grocery store without even a five second warning…..the list goes on and on.
The upside to all of this however is we wouldn’t change a second of it as we adore our beautiful children with their chipmunk cheeks and marvel at their accomplishments daily. Just when we all think our day couldn’t possibly go further south our little one will say something so profound from a place of inner peace and knowledge you swear even scholars of the highest intellect couldn’t match their wisdom.
In celebration of this day we thought we would add a little spin on the standard Mother’s Day bouquet and spa day. Here are two ways we can celebrate Moms and Grandmothers everywhere with a sprinkle of kindness to make the day last a little longer.

If you know a Grandma or Mom who is alone on Mother’s Day or even a woman that is like a Mom to so many that deserves to be acknowledged we suggest a nice surprise at her door. Wrap a small piece of construction paper into the shape of a cone, attach a ribbon with staples to the back into a loop, place some flowers from your garden into the cone along with a mini wand and leave on her door handle. Sometimes just knowing someone is thinking of you is the best thing you can do. This can be used for neighbors, your kids Moms, or any other woman you feel has played a mothering role, kids or not.photo 1

You can easily make your own wand bouquet by purchasing wands from a local craft store such as Michaels or Jo-Ann or at discount stores like the Dollar Tree; downloading/printing/hole punching the corner of the Infinite Smile Project tags and tying the tags around the wand (we have fun trying different color ribbons and of different widths, also adding a dab of hot glue to keep the tag ribbon affixed to the wand). Once you’ve finished making your wands, see the sample letter and itinerary below to print out as a card to gift along with the wand bouquet!

Download & Print the tags here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0WOPnXjgfDTclJmZTFmNzhCRHM/edit?usp=sharing

Here’s a sample of the letter to attach along with your wand bouquet:
Dear Mom,
Happy Mother’s Day! Because I love you so I have booked a week of things you love that only I would know. This week enjoy these activities I have planned for you and then pass on the kindness wand to friends old and new!
Please enjoy these acts of kindness wands and enjoy these activities I have booked for you to fill your heart with happiness and love. Each wand has an activity attached with an activity I know will enrich your soul. You may enjoy each of the things on this list but you must bring the wand with an act of kindness to each location and explain to that person what they must do with the wand. The Infinite Smile wand does come with some responsibility so choose wisely who receives it and help spread the kindness and love!
Attached is your itinerary for the week. You deserve it!
I love you,

Leaving Toys at your Local Park// An Infinite Smile Project IDEA

toysforthepark_infinitesmileprojectYour local or favorite park may be your kids’ (and your) second home, why not make the next trip to the park an extra special one with the Infinite Smile Project wands and play buckets filled with goodies to share with other kids. You will bring smiles with bucket of joy which you can find affordable and sometimes bulk items and toys from the dollar, discount store, Target’s dollar section, Party City or online retailer like Oriental Trading. Here are some things you can place into a bucket with the wand and stick into the sand, grass, or by the jungle gym:

1) Bubbles// You can’t go wrong with bubbles, the kids will just eat it up (not the actual bubbles, but getting to make bubbles and play with them)

2) Sidewalk Chalk// Let the kids explore their creative side with sidewalk chalk!

3) Bouncy Balls// The kids will go wild with bouncy balls, drop a few into a bucket. Try different colors, sizes, and even glitter or metallic!

4) Sunglasses// With the sunny days ahead, drop fun sunglasses like star and heart frames.

5) Bucket// Select tin bucket or plastic beach buckets that will hold all the items you plan to place at the park. Go for bright colors to let it pop at the park.

“What’s happening hot stuff?”

mysuperpoweriskindness_pinterestAs quoted from my favorite movie of all time, Sixteen Candles, “What’s happening hot stuff?” (see below) and thanks for dropping by to see what The Infinite Smile Project is all about. So, who are we you ask? We like to think of ourselves as a social experiment that could quite possibly change the world. If you look up the definition of infinite it will simply state something that is “unbounded or unlimited; boundless; endless”. Our common goal is to see what happens when people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds and interests start reaching out to one another with one fundamental truth in common: kindness. Kindness that creates infectious smiles that carry on as far as the eye can see.

intheendonlykindnessmatters_pinterest Kindness is something that anyone can give. It doesn’t require money, a certain educational degree or technical training. It doesn’t even require that it is done at a certain time or place. It can be given or received anyplace, anytime, by anyone for any reason. It requires none of these things but holds more power than all combined. Kindness is boundless, nurturing and can turn any bad day around in a split second. One of the best things we have found about kindness is it can come at the most unexpected time which is the type of kindness whose nectar is the sweetest.

If you read the blog post “The Birth of the Infinite Smile Project” you will see how this all started on January 4, 2014 with my 3 year old guinea pigs, A and R. What turned the tide of this simple day of random acts of kindness is the fact that even at age 3 one can comprehend the power of kindness. Even a toddler was able to revel in how it made them feel, to give rather than receive and it was fascinating to witness. Once we saw the span of how pure kindness affected both giver and receiver old and young it sparked a new mission. A mission to see what would happen if through social networking, friends, family, acquaintances and strangers alike we offered kindness, compassion, generosity and respect to one another every day.

What we want to see is a community, city, country, etc. that gets back to these fundamental acts so the hot topics aren’t bullying, depression, and violence. This blog will offer stories that inspire and make you smile, ideas of things you can do in your community to better the morale and most importantly ideas on how to spread kindness in the most organic form. Our initial posts are going to focus on our youngest philanthropists, our children. This blog will provide an online haven for parents of young children and adults who want to unleash their desire to create an aura of happiness wherever they go.

Please follow our blog for our posts on ideas on how we can spread pure yummy goodness in our communities, inspire our kids, better the world and make every day a little sweeter. After practicing random acts of kindness since January we can say with certainty the world has received us in an entirely different way and it’s our new addiction. And I think we kind of like it.

We look forward to you joining our crusade.

X o,

Kim & the Infinite Smile Crusaders

Donating or Volunteering at your Local Animal Shelter// An Infinite Smile Project Idea

Animal shelters all over the country tend to stay at full capacity. Most are running on a limited budget, and rely heavily on donations. With one visit to a shelter you can’t help but want to help. Some things shelters need are obvious, some are not. Helping may not be as hard as you think, and here are a few things you can donate to shelters:

1) Towels// We all wear out our towels. Some get fringe-y at the ends or dingy and discolored with holes in them. Guess what? The animals don’t care! Often, animals are brought in wet or cold. Sometimes, they just want something to lie on. Towels are very versatile and can be used as blankets, to dry a wet animal, or to clean messes the animals make at the shelter.

2) Old blankets// These can be used similar to the towels by being cut up to use in cages with smaller animals, or left whole for the larger animals because all of them love things to lay on. People often throw old and tattered blankets away, but shelters love them. Check yard sales, too. Often, people sell them very cheap and you can pass it on to animals in need.

3) Food// Dog food, cat food, or any other kind of animal food for the animals your shelter takes in. Sometimes, when the budget is stretched, food is needed badly. Consider using coupons or sales to get food at a discounted price to donate. Both dry and canned food can be used. Full bellies make animals happier in a scary situation. Mother’s milk replacements (you can buy this at Walmart or pet supply stores such as Petsmart).

4) Treats// Treats are often on sale at stores, and can be purchased cheap. Both dogs and cats look forward to these treats whenever they can get their paws on them. Most any kind is appreciated and Rawhide bones are also well loved.

5) Placemats// Tired of your placemats and looking to redecorate? Have old ones stored that you never use? Cloth and vinyl placemats are both useful by allowing cats to lay on them; vinyl mats can be used under food bowls; and cloth ones can be used for a kitty sized bed. It does not matter if they are stained or “dated”.

6) Cash// Of course, monetary donations are always appreciated and the shelter can use the money to purchase exactly what their animals need. Go to www.giveabowl.com/home.aspx to apply for a food coupon for YOUR pet, and Purina will give $1 to your local shelter. Every single dollar helps. Donate a couple of dollars of your own to help stretch the shelter’s budget, and most of the time, these donations are tax deductible.

7) Toys// If you were alone in a cage, wouldn’t you want something to play with? Check with your shelter as some take them and some don’t; but animal toys are often overlooked, and they wear out fast. Squeaky toys, stuffed animals and even balls are played with by our furry friends.

8) Litter// Most shelters have lots and lots of cats, and have to change litter often. They can always use more litter as well as  litter boxes for the many cats and kittens that are saved.

9) Laundry Detergent// Blankets, towels and cloth/material items have to be washed. Laundry detergent, if not donated, comes out of the shelter’s budget. Fabric softener is also very welcome!

10) Grooming Items// Animals need to be bathed, brushed, and taken care of. Items to help groom them are not often donated, you can change that by picking up these things from a dollar or discount store. Brushes, combs, shampoos, even animal nail clippers are useful and needed items.

11) Cat or Dog Beds// If you have them, if you see them on sale, or if you know someone getting rid of theirs…animal beds are so loved by the animals. A soft place to lay and relax. Comfort is important.

12) Leashes and Collars// Shelters often use them to walk animals, and  give them away with adoptions, so they are always in short supply. They aren’t very expensive, but when you go through so many, the cost adds up for the shelters. All sizes are needed and used.

13) Newspaper// Lots of us have newspapers, which shelters use to line the bottoms of cages for puppies and kittens. It something that takes no effort to collect, but makes a lot of difference. Imagine how often those papers need to be changed!!! If you get the paper daily, why not set them aside in a box or something similar and take them ever so often to your local shelter?

14) Food dishes and Bowls// Can you imagine how many of these shelters go through on a regular basis? They get worn out, pushed around, and broken. New ones are also something that isn’t expensive, but eats into a shelter budget.

15) Time// Can you go play with the animals on occasion? Can you help walk them, feed them, or care for them? Do you have room at your home to foster a loving pet until if finds a forever home? Shelters are often over-crowded, and sometimes under-staffed. Most are very happy to have volunteers. So much needs to be done on a day to day basis that often animals don’t get the attention they long for. Even the smallest amount of time can make a huge difference at a shelter. Consider one day a week after work, or a couple of hours on a weekend. Consider opening your home to a foster animal or two. The shelter and the animals will be grateful.

Contact your local shelters and find out what they need and how you can help! They may need things that aren’t listed here; some could use baby gates for wandering animals, or for shelters that take in smaller animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs, might need things like cages and water bottles. Your local shelter will be more than happy to let you know what they need. It takes very little to make a difference in the lives of animals, check out the animal shelter resources below:

The Birth of the Infinite Smile Project

It is difficult to decide how to spend a winter birthday when one lives in a year-round sunny wonderland and able to play at the beach practically every day, while others are buried in 10 feet of snow; the celebration opportunities are endless in Orange County. There’s not a single material thing that I need, however, there is one innate want I have always wanted my children to posses ; to have children that were kind. The sort of children that find more joy in giving and caring for others than they do receiving things for themselves.

As my three year old twins entered preschool for the first time I took notice of the delight and gratification that graced their adorable faces when they would run out of their classroom door with a special handmade trinket for me. Then came Christmas with a plethora of presents for these adored little girls. What surprised me was that they waited all morning to open their gifts but couldn’t wait to adorn everyone else with their gifts. With smiles that can melt any heart I watched them then decided this will be the best birthday ever. 10 days later we planned a day around town that signified my birthday but celebrated them and the kindness in their hearts. Thus began our spectacular day inaugurating the Infinite Smile Project……

We spent Friday night making wands, boxing items for marines and treats for firemen. Saturday morning we hit the streets of Orange County starting with a meal for a friend with a newborn and then headed off to the firehouse. At first shot the girls wanted to eat the ice cream themselves not easily convinced it was better to give it to someone else to eat. That’s just a ridiculous request to ask of a 3 year old, right Moms?  However once they saw the reaction they got from people they kicked it into high gear and were on a roll. Lucky for us, the firemen were slow that morning so we got a tour of the station and they got to hang out in the fire truck for a bit. Can’t say I wasn’t envious.
project smile sparkle star wandsNext we headed to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and delivered coloring books, crayons and stickers to the children. After spending some time there earlier this year, our one twin wasn’t sure this is where she wanted to be, and it took a lot of convincing to get her to understand it was a different sort of trip than the last. We explained to her that when she was trying to walk again after her surgery the toy chest at the end of the hall helped motivate her to walk and made her so happy. Now it was our turn to make other kids who weren’t feeling well walk again to the end of the hall. She was sold. Onward and upwards to act of kindness #3…….
Esmond Girls at CHOC Children's Hospital to drop off goodies for the kids (and wands!)The animal shelter I have determined is a kids’ utopia. Housing chickens, pigs, cats, dogs and other animals our kids were in Heaven.  The staff there was the most excited out of all of our stops that day and took the girls on a private tour of the shelter meeting all the animals. A box of dog biscuits and kitty treats never went so far. It was our kids’ favorite random act of the day.

We couldn’t think of a better random act of kindness than sending some American favorites to one of our deployed marines. We boxed up many of the items this marine wrote on his page and sent him some treats, playing cards and toiletry items he said he needed. This one wasn’t as fun for the kids since they couldn’t see the reaction of the recipient but it was our favorite act that day. For anyone that wants to send something to a marine or any other active military go to www.anysoldier.com.

All do-gooders need a pit stop to refuel and off to lunch we went to re-energize the kiddos.  If any of you have ever waited tables you know it is a hard job that requires long shifts on your feet, lots of patience, and sometimes great tips, but many times not. This waiter did give us a delicious birthday kona pie so we figured he would appreciate a nice tip on a kid’s meal along with a sparkly wand.

Last stop was a child’s paradise, “Castle Park”. Initially the kids just wanted to take off and play in their favorite park with all the jungle gyms and brick castles but once they laid one wand in the sand they were once again focused and persevered.  In several places in the park we laid wands with things like sidewalk chalk, bouncy balls, sand buckets and bubbles. As we walked away unsuspecting children started walking towards the sparkly wands that seemed to draw attention sticking out of the sand gleaming in the sunlight. It was so fun to watch these looks of confusion, then delight.
There was however one downside to this day. The kids didn’t want to stop and now I can’t think of more random acts quickly enough or make enough glitter wands for them. Throughout the day we had many discussions as to why we were leaving these items for people. You know, because a 3 year old can ask “why?” about 14,000 times a day. The best part was the next day when they would tell others how they left colorings books for sick kids because they needed them and ice cream for fireman because they help us every day.  Precious.

The day concluded with some very tired philanthropists and some adults who ended the day with friends and live music. We gathered up our amazing friends and fellow parents for some dinner and a U2 cover band to celebrate (www.hollywoodU2.com, they’re pretty fabulous). Our last random act was giving each of our friends, all with young children, a wand for their kids to enjoy and share the Infinite Smile Project in their town.  So the next time you are in the park or see something sparkling in the sun go check it out, it might just make your day.
